Author Interview:
Have you always wanted to become an author since you were younger?
Krista: I started writing when I was thirteen, so about a year after Becca. Back then, I wasn’t writing to become an author. My whole mindset for most of my life was to go to medical school and become a doctor. It wasn’t until college that I even wanted to pursue writing as a career, but I always thought it was something I could share with my passion for medicine. It took a while to realize that those two things personally couldn’t coexist in my life, so I chose the one I loved more.
Becca: I started writing when I was twelve. I dreamed about being an author one day, but our parents are very realistic and told me upfront that the likelihood was one in a million. But I loved writing too much to just stop. Author was never the goal. Being happy was the goal, and writing made me happy. I just wanted to write for as long and as much as I could. So I wrote all the time growing up for fun. Krista joined in, and every time I finished a book, I fantasized about it being on a shelf in a bookstore. Other people reading it. So I’d query literary agents at 14, 15, 16 etc.—with this idealistic fantasy of what if someone says “yes” to me. No one ever did, but I never stopped querying on the side. I ultimately went to college to pursue a career in television production. And yep, I kept querying even then too. All up until we decided to self-publish. And then our dreams came true because of these great, miraculous readers. I’m just really grateful, every day.
At what age did you guys starting the series? whose idea was it first?
Krista: We were 21. It was the second semester of our senior year in college. We wrote a few YA novels before that, and I usually would pitch Becca concepts all the time. Some would be ridiculously awful, while others we’re actual decent. We just watched the movie Shame, and I really wanted to explore a story with the female as a sex addict. So I pitched Becca the concept of a NA novel with a romance between a female sex addict and alcoholic. Luckily for me she liked it enough to plot it out and write it with me ☺
Becca: It was most definitely Krista’s idea! I’m happy she shared the concept with me because Lily Calloway exists from Krista’s mind—and I can’t imagine a world where I don’t meet her.
Who was the first person to ever read your series?
Krista: Besides each other, I suppose our mom would be the first person. She reads all of our books before anyone else.
Becca: Yep, our mom reads all of our books before they go live. She’s a huge Coballoway shipper, so she’ll leave notes in her Kindle for us around Connor’s scenes like I just love him. I want him! And then the Rose & Connor parts are littered with her feels. She’s been so supportive of us, and I can’t imagine this journey without her.
What's self-publishing like? any advice to people who are considering on self publish?
Krista: It’s very hands-on! If you like control during the publishing process, then self-publishing may be for you. Advice: research, research, research. There are so many authors who have taken this journey, and while everyone’s journey is different, it’s now a lot easier to find how-to guides and testimonials about what works and what doesn’t. We’re still learning things!
Becca: What Krista said! Self-publishing takes tons of dedication from start to finish, but we wouldn’t be authors right now without self-publishing. It’s been not only invaluable to us, but it’s changed our lives. My advice too: if you’re going through bumpy times as a self-published author, always look forward. A publisher doesn’t control your destiny, and tomorrow, you can pick yourself back up again and rise.
What's it like co-writing series with each other? do you guys always get along/agree on how the story should go/what would happen? were there ever any disagreements?
Krista: It’s incredibly fun! Seriously, I would not want to write on my own. She fangirls over my writing and I get to fangirl over hers! It’s the best of both worlds. We agree for the most part, but if we ever disagree, we’ll sit down and have long discussions to return to a point of agreement. It’s really about communicating well.
Becca: I love Krista! That is all :)
If your characters read YA, which book/series would be their favourite?
Krista: Daisy’s favorite YA Book is the Iron Fey series. Lo and Lily love Harry Potter—and I suppose the later books would be considered YA. I’ll leave Becca with the harder three *evil laugh*
Becca: Ooooooh she left me the harder ones! Okay, so Rose would love YA contemporary romance books. Anna and the French Kiss, Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins—she’d be drawn to those. I can see Connor really loving novels that step outside of the box in terms of diction and style. Maybe We Were Liars by E. Lockhart. Ryke would love Scarlet by A.C. Gaughen. It has feminist undertones, and it’s adventure-packed.
Personality-wise, who are you most alike with in terms of your characters and why?
Krista: I’m most like Connor and Rose. They’re both very goal-oriented and driven like me. People also sometimes view me as cold, but underneath my armor, I do care a lot about the people I love. Their whole backstories with the honor societies is also something I’ve been through. It’s a different kind of mindset when you grow up pushing yourself to succeed. I relate to Connor’s fear of failure in Kiss the Sky a lot.
Becca: A mix of Daisy and Lily. I can be more upbeat and energized. Like the bubbliness to Krista’s super intellect. She’s the fancy champagne that you’d be like more please, and I’m the fizz that tickles your nose. This is a very strange metaphor, but I’m going to roll with it!
